History

The existence of Greenacres is attributed to Lawrence Carter Swain, its founder, who moved in to settle with his family from Massachusetts. By 1920, Palm Beach and other resort towns were alive with posh houses and first class community services. They thus attracted a concentration of the wealthy and the middle class were sidelined. The need for a decent affordable life for the middle class drove Mr. Swain begin accumulating property with the aim of providing affordable housing. His burning desire bore fruit; he ended up with an estimated 1000 acres of land. He divided it into sections known as “plats”. Plat II covering half a mile to the west of Military Trail became the original city Plat to date.
