Coral Springs Information and Highlights
Coral Springs is popularly called “the City in the Country.” It is a premier South Florida community, highly recognized for its numerous parks, good quality schools, attractive neighborhoods, as well as diverse athletic programs.
Before the land was incorporated in the year 1963 as a city, the area was part of a large tract of land which was bought by Henry “Bud” Lyons. He acquired the land of over 20,000 acres between 1911 and 1939. Some parts of the land were used to grow beans, which earned it the nickname “Titan of the Bean Patch.” After the death of Lyons, its vast land holdings were controlled by his family. The family members converted the land to a ranching ground, which generated over 5,000 head of cattle.
Similar to the land rush situation that occurred in the 1920s, there was another real estate boom in the South Florida after World War II. A Land development firm called “Coral Ridge Properties,” started by James Hunt and others, was set up to develop communities in Broward County. By the period of the late 1950s, the company was already running out of land to further develop in the Fort Lauderdale area. They started seeking for more opportunity further west.
Although the land in the northwest region was somehow swampy, it was owned by Lyons. Hunt was very interested in the property because it suited his vision for a master-planned community. In the year 1961, Coral Ridge Properties bought over 3,860 acres for $1 million in this area. Coral Ridge Properties from the beginning of operation in this area had enacted strict landscaping and in addition, signed laws that were made to create a beautiful as well as natural looking town.
