Wellington Florida - Information and Highlights
History
Wellington Florida is one of the most successfully established city in the Palm Beach County. This premier South Florida Community is widely recognized for its abundance of parks, good quality schools, attractive neighborhoods, as well as equestrian interests.
Charles Oliver Wellington, a very successful accountant as well as an investor from the New York bought several tracts of land, which later became the Wellington of today. The land he bought was frequently flooded with water at that time. However, this is actually not surprising due that Wellington’s southwest boundary is the Florida Everglades. Immediately after he purchased land in this region, the State of Florida was able to pass a legislation for the creation of the Acme Drainage District. The purpose of the district was to provide drainage as well as flood control, to make the property more suitable for agricultural purposes. This development automatically transformed the entire landscape from waterlogged land into a fertile farmland. Different portions of land on this location was sold to farmers for cultivation and different crops where grown. In fact, Wellington was once recognized as the largest strawberry patch in the world.
Mr. Wellington became the first Chairman of the Acme Drainage District and served until 1959 when he died. It was after the death of Mr. Wellington that led to the decision to further develop some parts of the property in order to raise capital to pay for estate taxes. Roger, who was Wellington’s son, continued as a District Chairman till the year 1984 when he retired. There was no main construction until about 7,400 acres, which was the first large tract of land was sold in 1971 at the cost of $800 to the Investment Corporations of Florida (ICOF).
